Rescued Animals: Lilly's Story

🐾 Hi, I'm Lilly — you can adopt me remotely

Lilly is about nine months old and still little more than a puppy. Yet, when she was found, her body already told a whole life story of abandonment, hunger, and suffering.

She lived as a stray with other dogs, in a situation of severe degradation. She was blind, missing an eye, extremely debilitated, and covered in parasites.

She was destined to die with hardly anyone noticing her.

💚 Valentina Chose Not to Look Away

Valentina had noticed Lilly and her desperate condition. She started monitoring her, bringing her food, and slowly trying to gain her trust.

When she realized how serious the situation was, she asked for our help to rescue her and finally get her to safety.

But approaching a stray dog who was blind, scared, and used to surviving without any protection was not easy.

The rescue required many hours, several attempts, and multiple on-site interventions. We couldn't give up: every day spent on the streets increased the risk that Lilly wouldn't survive.

🩺 A Very Serious Veterinary Situation

After the rescue, Lilly was immediately taken to the vet. Her condition was even worse than it appeared.

Tests revealed:

• a severe infestation of tapeworms and other intestinal parasites;
• at least fifty ticks on her body;
• severe anemia;
• extreme weakness and difficulty standing;
• blindness and absence of one eye;
• an overall picture of malnutrition and profound wasting.

Lilly was at her limit. Without Valentina's attention and immediate intervention from our Sanctuary, she would have certainly died.

❤️ Now Lilly is in Her Forever Home

Despite everything she has been through, Lilly is a very sweet dog.

She arrived at Santuario Sotto la Panca and, for the first time in her young life, she no longer has to fight every day to find food, water, or a place to rest.

Here she will be protected, cared for, and loved. This will be her forever home.

However, her journey to recovery is just beginning.

The initial veterinary expenses have been significant, and Lilly will still need therapies, check-ups, antiparasitic treatments, appropriate nutrition, and time to regain her strength.

She will also need to be spayed and undergo surgery to properly close the cavity of her missing eye, which would otherwise continue to be exposed to the risk of infection.

• medications and therapies against parasites;

Being blind will not prevent Lilly from having a full life. With stable reference points, patience, and love, she can learn to move safely and experience the world through sounds, smells, and contact with the people who will care for her.
