Veganism: not a diet, but a different way of looking at animals

Veganism is often described as a diet. But removing meat, fish, dairy, and eggs from your plate is only the most visible part of a much deeper change: ceasing to consider animals as tools at our disposal.

Veganism means possible consistency, not perfection. It is the concrete attempt to avoid, as far as practicable, animal exploitation in food, clothing, entertainment, and daily consumption.

Not "what are you eating?", but "who are you looking at?"

When we meet a dog or a cat, we immediately see a personality: shy, stubborn, affectionate, curious. With a sheep, a goat, or a pig, we are more easily taught to see a category: livestock, production, meat. Veganism challenges this very division.

At the Sanctuary, we know the animals by name. Each has preferences, fears, and relationships. Also read what an animal sanctuary is and why it is different from a farm or a zoo.

An ethical choice that touches many areas

  • Food: prioritizing plant-based foods and products without animal ingredients.
  • Clothing: avoiding leather, fur, feathers, wool, and silk when alternatives exist.
  • Cosmetics and home: seeking products not tested on animals and without animal ingredients.
  • Entertainment: not supporting shows or places that use animals as attractions.
  • Language: recognizing that words influence how we think and act.

"But can one person change anything?"

No individual choice alone solves a global system. But cultural transformations begin when what seemed normal ceases to be so. Every avoided purchase, every respectful conversation, and every accessible alternative helps shift demand and imagination.

You don't need to know everything before starting. You can start with a plant-based breakfast, learn a new recipe, read labels, or choose a cruelty-free product. The direction matters more than the unrealistic idea of being impeccable.

Veganism, environment, and justice

Reducing animal products can lessen the pressure on land and resources. The IPCC considers shifts towards more plant-based dietary patterns among climate mitigation options. However, the vegan choice is not only about emissions: it is primarily about refusing to turn sentient beings into means.

The role of sanctuaries

Sanctuaries make visible what the system hides. Here a sheep is not wool, a pig is not meat, and a goat is not milk. They are rescued individuals who can finally express their personalities. Also discover the difference between a shelter, a kennel, and a sanctuary.

Veganism does not ask us to love every animal. It asks us for something more essential: to recognize that their lives do not belong to us.
