Corporate volunteering and ethical team building: how to truly help a sanctuary
Share
Corporate volunteering can be much more than a photo opportunity day out of the office. When designed respectfully, it can put skills, time, and resources at the service of a sanctuary, while strengthening collaboration and awareness among employees.
What is corporate volunteering?
It is an initiative through which a company allows or encourages its people to dedicate time and skills to a social project. It is part of a concrete vision of corporate social responsibility: the European Commission describes CSR as the responsibility of enterprises for their impact on society.
How it can help a sanctuary
Not all activities involve direct contact with animals. Indeed, their peace comes first. Depending on the needs and skills, a group can contribute to:
- light maintenance, cleaning, and tidying of areas;
- internal fundraising or a matching gift campaign;
- photography, video, graphics, and communication;
- administrative, legal, or digital support;
- collection of pre-agreed materials;
- translations, training, or awareness-raising activities.
Five rules to avoid voluntourism
- Listen before proposing: ask what activities are truly needed.
- Respect timing and limits: the Sanctuary is not an event location.
- Do not force contact: animals choose whether to approach.
- Cover costs: hosting a group requires organization and supervision.
- Build continuity: a recurring partnership is worth more than a single day.
Benefits for people and the company
A well-designed activity can create relationships among colleagues, develop transferable skills, and make the organization's stated values tangible. But the corporate benefit must be a consequence of the impact generated, not its substitute.
Volunteering or sponsorship?
They are different tools and can coexist. Volunteering offers time or skills; sponsorship guarantees predictable financial resources. To discover programs dedicated to businesses, visit the Corporate Sponsorship page and learn about the companies that already support the Sanctuary.
How to propose a collaboration
Indicate the number of participants, period, company location, available skills, budget, and objectives. The Sanctuary will then be able to assess whether a compatible activity exists, considering the animals and daily work.
