🐖 Why factory farming needs to end

🌋 What is factory farming?

Factory farming — also known as intensive farming — is an industrial system of meat, dairy, and egg production based on raising animals on a large scale, with the goal of maximizing yield and minimizing costs. In these facilities, profit comes before welfare, leading to overcrowded, stressful, and often inhumane conditions for animals such as pigs, chickens, cows, and sheep.

According to LAV, over 500 million animals are confined to factory farms every year in Italy alone. In these places, animals are denied movement, natural behaviors, and dignity in the name of economic efficiency.

⚠️ Why is it a problem?

1. Animal suffering

In factory farms, animals live confined for their entire lives, undergo painful mutilations without anesthesia, and have no environmental stimulation.

These practices are not exceptions, but the norm.

Organizations like Animal Equality and Animal Justice have repeatedly documented, through undercover investigations, the extreme systemic cruelty of these places.

2. Environmental impact

Factory farming is among the main causes of deforestation, pollution, and climate-altering emissions.

Livestock farms produce enormous quantities of slurry and methane, polluting the air and groundwater in surrounding areas.

Even the European Parliament has called for the end of cage farming by 2027, for both environmental and ethical reasons.

3. Risks to human health

Factory farms are veritable hotbeds of disease. Overcrowding and the abuse of antibiotics favor the emergence of drug-resistant infections.

Recent pandemics have highlighted the real risk of zoonotic diseases transmitted to humans through the animal industry.

🛏️ The role of sanctuaries

Animal sanctuaries like Sotto la Panca show that an alternative is possible: a choice based on compassion, respect, and justice.

We host and care for animals rescued from slaughter, neglect, and exploitation.

A sanctuary doesn't just save lives: it challenges the idea that animals are commodities.
